Free Font Sources

 

 

Do you need a new font for a project you're working on? Here are a few sources of free, and royalty-free, fonts you may be interested in checking out.

Clicking on any of the links below will open a new window or tab and take you to another website. Phase One has no control over these websites. Please use caution when visiting them. And, as with all free software, please investigate before downloading to be sure they are safe and free from malware.

  • BlueMonkeyLab : They only have two fonts series, with each series having 5 fonts, but who knows? Maybe you'll find just what you need.
  • dafont : From their site: "The fonts presented on this website are their authors' property, and are either freeware, shareware, demo versions or public domain. The licence mentioned above the download button is just an indication. Please look at the readme-files in the archives or check the indicated author's website for details, and contact him/her if in doubt. If no author/licence is indicated that's because we don't have information, that doesn't mean it's free.
  • FFonts : Free and Premuim ($29/year) accounts. Free accounts may download up to 50 fonts and 50 webfonts per day (200 each for premium account holders). Other benefits and advantages are available to premium account holders.
  • Fonts In PDF will identify fonts used in PDF documents. Has options to display all the fonts used in the document or only the font(s) used on a certain page.
  • Font Face Ninja : From their website: "Inspect, try, buy and bookmark fonts." This is available as a browser extension for Chrome, Safari and Firefox. Once installed and you are on a page with a font you like, click on the icon in your browser and hover over a font and a pop-up will tell you the font name and whether it is free or for sale. If you see a frowny face and "Not found", it could be a Google font.
  • Font Meme : Fonts & Typography Resource
  • Fonts Panda : "Download Free Fonts Quickly"
  • FontStock.net has 20 categories of free fonts, with from 100 to 3,000 fonts each. You can type in your choice of text so you can see what it will look like before you download it.
  • Fonts2U
  • Freebies Bug : Free Hand-Picked Resources for Designers.
  • MyFontFree.com : There's no description on their site, so I'll just say... "Free fonts (many, many categories) - how can you beat that?"
  • SoftMaker : From their website: "Every month you'll find a different font here from our huge selection totally free to download – no strings attached. Visit regularly to make sure you never miss out on any of our free typefaces." Available for Windows, Mac & Linux.
  • Weekly Fonts Wednesday : At the time of this writing, they have 2683 free fonts for commercial use. They have a search function and checkboxes that will show only those fonts in certain categories (such as Serif, Sans Serif, Script, Decorative and Symbol, among others).
  • What Font Is (This) : will identify fonts when you upload either a graphic representation (sample) of the font, or put in the URL of same (currently limited to Latin letters and numbers). A free account is required. An upgraded account is available. There are 5 font identifications per day for a standard account and an unlimited number per day for premium accounts. Other limitations apply to free accounts. It is not readily apparent how much an upgraded account costs.

  • TransFonter Allows you to use your *.ttf font files to generate the neccesary font formats to display custom fonts on your website.

  • Fontifier lets you use your own handwriting for the text you write on your computer. It turns a scanned sample of your handwriting into a handwriting font you can use in your word processor or graphics programs, just like regular fonts such as Helvetica.
  • FontStruct : Build, share and download fonts with their simple editor.
  • BitFontMaker2 is fast and easy Online Bitmap font Editor. You can edit and build a pixel-font with your web browser.

Not free, but perhaps worth investigating – you decide:

  • YourFonts.com is an online font generator that allows you to create your own OpenType fonts within a couple of minutes. Preview your font for free. Go make your own handwriting as a font! Starting at $9.95 - only purchase if you're satisfied!
